This year’s Walls & Ceilings Convention Companion has changed due to the climate of COVID-19. The list attempts to keep our readers up-to-date on an expanding roster of trade shows and conventions serving our industry. This year’s events show a shift with in-person to virtual events. Many shows are attempting to resume pre-COVID conditions, hosting in-person events. However, other shows are completely embracing virtual experiences.

Notably absent from the typical listings to our Convention Companion are the CONSTRUCT/CSI Show, The Remodeling Show, and California’s WACA Awards Conference. Some shows have delayed their typical annual shows with other industry events in their place.

So, this year reflects a newer agenda that shows us dipping our feet back into the trade show and travel world, with some live and some virtual experiences. However you choose to participate in these events, hopefully this Convention Companion will guide you on the right and appropriate means to experience these respective events.

April 26-29, virtual show

The Wall and Ceiling Convention & Trade Show

This year, NWCB introduces its Wall and Ceiling Campus App for its first ever virtual show.

The 2021 Wall and Ceiling Convention & Trade Show will be a virtual event and take place on April 26-29 on NWCB’s new Wall and Ceiling Campus. The bureau has rescheduled the 2021 in-person event planned at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach to 2023.

The Wall and Ceiling Campus is, according to the NWCB, the best option when people can’t safely get together in person. Attendees will have an opportunity to connect and talk with other professionals in the wall and ceiling industry, while one’s avatar moves around the meeting venue and participates in meetings, seminars, social events and the trade show.

Save the date and plan to attend the Virtual Wall and Ceiling Convention & Trade Show on April 26-29. Keep an eye on your inbox for an invitation to register and visit the event website www.wallceilingshow.org for the latest information. Next year’s event is scheduled to take place at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 5-7.

AIA ’21

This year’s AIA show will be a new experience for the institute, its members and those that attend its annual conference. Instead of being held in Philadelphia as originally planned, this year shows AIA embracing technology and having the event turn virtual.

As of press time, not much is available on this year’s seminars, speakers or agenda.

It is Walls & Ceilings’ understanding that the event will resemble what the AIA has offered in the past of seminars, a (virtual) trade show, keynote speakers, and the lot.

For up to date information on this show, visit conferenceonarchitecture.com.

World of Concrete

World of Concrete 2020 exceeded expectations across the board and concluded its 45th edition as the largest World of Concrete in over a decade. This year, one of North America’s largest trade shows will again return to Las Vegas, though this time in June as opposed to its typical January/February show.

World of Concrete offers Walls & Ceilings’ readers plenty: manufacturers of insulation, stucco/EIFS, ICFs/SIPs, hand and power tools, masonry, scaffolding and lift equipment all have a strong presence in the indoor and outdoor pavilions.

The Annual SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 World Championship always brings in the crowds, as regional masons compete for a new truck and bragging rights. Some 20-odd bricklaying teams travel from all over North America to compete for the title World’s Best Bricklayer. Past winners have walked away with $120,000 in cash and prizes, Ford F-250s, John Deere equipment and more.

Stucco LIVE! will again be located in the North Hall and will continue to showcase best practices for flashing, lathing and cement plaster applications for commercial and residential installations.

New for 2021, the Stucco Manufacturers Association will be hosting two classes:

Lather Training for Cement Stucco on Wednesday, June 9 from 1:30-3:00pm, and Plaster Training for Cement Stucco on Thursday, June 10 from 1:30-3:00pm. Both training classes will be held in the North Hall and registration for either class is $100.

Also new for 2021 is the Cement Product Pavilion in the North Hall which will feature the leaders of equipment and support services used in cement processing.

Las Vegas in June is very hot. Be sure to follow weather reports and hydrate. For more information, visit worldofconcrete.com.

Greenbuild International Conference & Expo

Due to the success of last year’s virtual presentation, this year’s Greenbuild offers a truly unique experience: Attend in-person in San Diego or experience the show via your computer. Greenbuild is the place to be to get inspired and find yourself among other like-minded people in the sustainable building and construction industry. Planning for the 2021 event is still underway.

Given the popularity of the education, accessibility and expanded CE offerings, Greenbuild will produce several different events this year. This year’s event will showcase:

  • Three new summits

  • Three days of in-person education

  • Seventy-five plus sessions

  • Trade show floor to see manufacturers’ latest products

A lot of programming and planning is still in the works as Greenbuild fine tunes its excellent and large show. One of the highlights is a keynote speech from Atlanta’s Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Of course, loads of other speakers will be lined up as Greenbuild continues to finalize plans for this September.

Visit greenbuildexpo.com for all the up-to-date news, show and schedule information, hotel reservations and more.

ICAA Convention & Trade Show

The association encourages all previous vendors and exhibitors to shine up their booths and set up shop on the ICAA trade show floor.

The event is held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, a 600-acre oasis with a striking landscape. The resort is a leader in safety protocols and has a wealth of outdoor experiences including hiking trails and on site golf.

2021 VIRTUAL

National Fire Protection Association, Conference & Expo

The National Fire Protection Association has announced that it will not hold its 2021 NFPA Conference & Expo. The association says it plans to hold its next in-person show in Boston in 2022.

In place of the Conference & Expo, the association will celebrate its 125th anniversary this year by creating a “new experience” that promises to live up to those high expectations and one where everyone can safely attend and participate.

The Anniversary Conference Series

The NFPA is not only going virtual—it’s leveraging technologies to create a year-long, unique education series that will be a continuous lineup of comprehensive education and novel elements.

What does the virtual conference series look like?

  • Education series throughout the entire year (and stretching into 2022) to celebrate and commemorate 125 years of NFPA

  • Targeted virtual events for individual audiences to focus on what matters most to you

  • Expanded networking opportunities through group chats and one-on-one virtual meetings

  • Meeting with sponsors and product demonstrations

Even before everyone began to “go digital,” NFPA was developing virtual solutions. With digital products—including its NFPA LiNK information delivery platform and online learning opportunities—the association is positioned to launch a focused virtual experience this year.
