Rockwood Sustainable Solutions Tennessee Drywall Recycling Facility

Rockwood Sustainable Solutions Opens Tennessee’s First Drywall Recycling Facility

Rockwood Sustainable Solutions, an industry-leading construction waste recycler, announced the opening of Tennessee’s first drywall recycling facility. The innovative facility in Lebanon, Tennessee, now accepts scrap drywall from drywall installers, contractors and manufacturers, as well as broken drywall boards from distributors, thus keeping a prolific waste stream out of the landfill. In addition to extending the landfill’s life, removing drywall can reduce landfill odors because when the gypsum gets wet, it can create hydrogen sulfide, producing a rotten egg smell. Additionally, Rockwood has partnered with another Lebanon company, Arrowhead Ag, for the beneficial reuse of the product. Arrowhead makes soil amendments for the agriculture industry, including soil conditioners for farmers, growers and landscape contractors.

“From the start, we’ve been focused on recycling construction materials, so in many ways, this is a natural next step in that progression,” said Rockwood founder Lincoln Young. “Customers have been asking us to take drywall for a while, and now we’re able to recycle it through Arrowhead Ag to complete the circle.”

According to the Gypsum Association, there are 25 billion square feet of gypsum board produced annually. This is then installed in commercial and residential facilities such as single-family and multi-family residences, offices, schools, stores and more. A general rule of thumb is to purchase 10-12 percent more than needed to accommodate off-cuts, trimmings and waste. That adds up to a lot of scrap drywall, especially when you add in the broken pieces from the drywall distributor and scrap from the manufacturing plant.

Arrowhead Ag will further process the drywall, pulverizing it finer than screening out the paper. The ground gypsum will be utilized as soil amendments and fertilizer for the agricultural industry, while the paper will be used to make animal bedding. Creating beneficial uses for the product is important to Young because it creates a valuable end-of-life option for waste drywall. It is also important to Arrowhead, which now has a steady supply of feedstock.

Ripple Glass Owens Corning Atlanta Glass Recycling Bin

Ripple Glass and OC Partner to Expand Glass Recycling Program

Ripple Glass, a company of Strategic Materials Inc., is collaborating with building materials leader Owens Corning in recognition of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.

Ripple Glass will host glass recycling events, swag giveaways and a social media campaign to support the collection program, with bins in their bold purple color. With the mantra “Give Glass a Second Life,” Ripple Glass launched their expansion in Atlanta earlier this year and collects more than 1.6 million pounds of glass each week nationwide. Owens Corning was the inventor of fiberglass in 1938 and uses recycled glass and other natural ingredients in its PINK Next Gen Fiberglas insulation batts and rolls. They also feature a variety of insulation products for every application, from attic to basement, and a full line of roofing products at home centers nationwide.

“What better way to honor America Recycles Day than to launch the first Ripple Glass—Owens Corning sponsored collection bin at Atlanta’s CHaRM/Live Thrive, a well-respected nonprofit in the area,” said Laura Hennemann, SVP of sustainability and corporate affairs at Ripple Glass. “The bin will continue to move around the metro area for the community to see, and we will host a glass recycling pop-up event in the future.”

“We are proud to work with Ripple Glass on this exciting recycling effort,” said Eric Miller, marketing leader at Owens Corning, Home Center. “Atlanta is a great launch point since our national retail partner, The Home Depot, is based here.” Miller said consumers and pros can go to Home Depot’s website to learn more about Owens Corning PINK Next Gen Fiberglas insulation, especially as winter approaches. He noted that Owens Corning also operates the Fairburn, Georgia, insulation manufacturing facility outside of Atlanta, so there is a direct connection to the glass consumers bring to the bin.

The market for recycled glass in Georgia is uniquely positioned, with strong demand from several leading fiberglass insulation companies operating in the state. The use of recycled glass in the production of new fiberglass insulation offsets the need for virgin, mined material, such as sand. Recycled glass also melts at a lower temperature, resulting in more responsible manufacturing by lowering energy usage and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Georgia residents can recycle a glass bottle with the Ripple Glass program, and it’ll be back on a local shelf as insulation in less than 30 days. Six glass bottles are able to generate enough fiberglass insulation for one standard wall cavity.

From a sustainability standpoint, PINK Next Gen Fiberglas insulation uses more than 1 billion pounds of glass recycled each year,1 with the highest recycled content in the industry.2

RIDGID 100th Anniversary Celebration Miniature Golf

RIDGID Marks its 100-Year Anniversary

RIDGID is celebrating a major milestone this year: 100 years of designing and building innovative tools trusted on job sites around the world and handed down from generation to generation. This summer, the company commemorated the occasion by inviting employees past and present, along with their families, to an open house event filled with food, music, entertainment, children’s activities, plant tours and more. Nearly 1,000 employees, retirees and their family members attended the festivities.

“All year we have been celebrating our anniversary alongside our customers and tradespeople around the world,” said Craig Sumner, president of professional tools for Emerson. “Bringing the celebration home to our Elyria headquarters was a great way for us to gather with the people who made our 100-year milestone possible: our employees, retirees and their families. These are the people who built and continue to build the products that set us apart.”

CertainTeed’s Ceilings Plant Saves Millions of Emissions

Saint-Gobain North America, through its building products subsidiary CertainTeed LLC, announced the opening of its newest CertainTeed Architectural facility in Conyers, Ga. The plant will be co-located with finishing partner Quality Powder Coating, allowing Saint-Gobain to drastically reduce the distance its products must travel to finalize production, lowering its CO2 emissions by over 50 million pounds per year.

The announcement comes as the company continues to implement its global Grow and Impact strategy, which includes ambitious environmental sustainability goals, such as achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. A sister site to CertainTeed Architectural’s existing facility in nearby Norcross, Ga., the Conyers site will produce CertainTeed’s High-Profile Series, Terminus and HeartFelt lines. Currently, the Norcross facility ships its products to QPC’s location in Dallas for coating and finishing. By co-locating CertainTeed and QPC together in Conyers later this year, Saint-Gobain will save over 211,000 truck miles per year, which equates to a reduction of over 50 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually.
